All about the trip
Pico island hosts the highest mountain of Portugal: Mount Pico, rising up to 2,351m above the sea level. The island is also home to vineyards, which are classified as UNESCO Patrimony since 2004. It is definitely a place you don’t want to miss during your holidays in the Azores. There is an airport to fly from São Miguel island and other islands as well as a Ferry during the high season. Futurismo also provides boat tickets to Pico island, meet us in our shop or contact us for more information about this.
Our whale watching adventure will start in Lajes do Pico harbor, on the South Coast of the island. There, our marine biologists will do a briefing about the experience you are about to have and the species you might see as well as the whale watching guidelines we follow to respect the animals in their natural habitat.
The zodiac boat trip will last for about 3 hours before going back to the harbor.
Here in the Azores, there are 28 cetacean species you can observe during the year. Whereas Spring is the best time to observe big whales such as blue whales, fin whales or Sei whales among others, we do have resident species (sperm whales, common dolphins, Risso’s dolphins, and bottlenose dolphins), who are present all year round.
During our half-day tour, in addition to whales and dolphins, you can also see turtles, seabirds and other marine life. Each passenger is required to wear a life vest because this tour is on a zodiac boat, which is less stable than the catamarans we have in São Miguel island.
