All about the trip

Tindfjallajökull is a perfect glacier hike for people, who want a nice day of hiking on the high glacier. This glacier is not overcrowded so this is an excellent place to enjoy a day in Island nature.

We start our day in Hvolsvöllur, from where we need to take a jeep up to the mountains. How far we can drive by car, depends on weather conditions in the mountains.

The hike starts with gravel and snow around 900 meters. First point is the mountain Saxi, small rock reef, that is fun to climb. This is also a good place to have some snack and water. After Saxi, we will go to the glacier. From this viewpoint, we can see the summit Ýmir (1446 meters). The glacier hike is pretty flat and easy to walk on from the start of the glacier to the summit slope. It takes about 1-2 hours.

Summit slope is the steepest part of the hike. From the summit, we could go in two different ways. We can hike to the neighboring peak Ýma (1448m) or if you are tired you can start the hike back to the jeep.

On a bright day, the views from the summits will amaze you. You could see into the valley Þórsmörk and the famous glacier Eyjafjallajökull which erupted in the year 2010. In the south, you can see the south coast and Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands). This is one of the most stunning areas in Iceland.

What to take with you?

We recommend to wear warm clothes (rain gear pants and jacket). Bring good hiking shoes, a hat and gloves. Please, take a 20-30l backpack, food and water for the day, hiking poles and sunglasses would be fine too.
