All about the trip
Bucegi Massif has some of the best known mountain landmarks of Romania. Old Ladies (Babele) and the Sphynx are rock formations sculpted by the wind. Heroes' Cross on Caraiman Peak which overlooks mountain resorts of Prahova Valley and which was raised during the interwar period to commemorate the loss of lives in the World War I. Omu, which is the highest peak in Bucegi Mountains at 2507 m altitude, stands also as one of the highest peaks of Romania. It is among the most visited mountains in the world. This easy hiking tour covers all of these landmarks and shows you the magical side of Romanian nature.
We start early from Bucharest so as to avoid the morning traffic jam and to be as much as possible outdoors and not in the city. At 8:30 we will be in Busteni mountain resort from where we will take the cable car which will take us in about 20 minutes to more than 2000 m altitude. This is the place where we start the hike. Just 10 minutes from the station of the cable car our first objectives of the day comes into sight: the group of rocks called Old Ladies and the Sphynx. This last one resembles a human face if you look at it from a certain angle.
We continue along the beautiful mountain plateau of Bucegi towards the cross of Caraiman from where we will have a great vantage point of the entire valley of Prahova with the busy traffic of the most circulated road of Romania, which links Bucharest and Brasov. From there we go for the highest peak of the mountain (Omu – 2507 m). The view from there is gorgeous: four big glaciated valleys sided by amazing peaks. On top of the peak stands a mountain hut where we can have lunch.
If you are still fit and yearning for more sights, we can head down directly from Omu peak to the beautiful valley of Cerbului, but this will take us some extra hours. If not, we will return to the cable car station in a couple of hours and go back Busteni the way we came.
