All about the trip
Walking is by far the best way to explore Budapest and to truly discover interesting details that lay hidden within the streets of this magnificent capital city.
So join us on the Grand Walk tour to visit a plethora of the city’s major landmarks…along with some lesser-known spots which we believe should not be missed. Focusing on the fascinating history of both the city and the country, this tour covers a large area of Budapest and squeezes in many places of interest. We’ll cover lots of ground on this walk, approximately 3 miles or so.
We begin in the Pest Palace district, with a glass of sparkling Hungarian wine; to help us get acclimatised of course. In this neighbourhood we’ll see many incredible buildings, including the Hungarian National Radio Building (an important site during the 1956 Revolution) and also the National Museum. Many buildings in this neighbourhood were once aristocratic palaces and their grandeur continues to live on to this day.
Next, we will check out the neighbouring Jewish District to see Europe’s largest Grand Synagogue, the Gozsdu udvar complex, which is situated on the bustling Király utca street.
During the tour we will see many grand public spaces such as Kossuth tér, Szabadság tér and the Heroes’ square. We’ll also see grand architecture such as The Postal Savings Bank building (built by Ödön Lechner, the Gaudi of Hungary), the Academy of Sciences (founded by statesman Count István Széchenyi), interesting buildings on Andrássy út such as the Opera and the Ballet Institute and many others of historical interest.
We’ll see many famous monuments including the heart-breaking 'Shoes on the Danube' Holocaust memorial and the Soviet monument. You’ll also learn why there are memorials to a U.S. major and Ronald Reagan in Budapest.
We’ll take a ride on continental Europe’s oldest metro line (so we can cover more ground), and we’ll also stop for a coffee break at one of the city’s best cafés.
Budapest has so many layers of history and this tour brings them to life through the stories of the buildings and its streets. Of course, we also mention the important players in Hungarian history too. These include kings, dictators, freedom fighters, architects, writers, politicians and the everyday people. So, join us to learn more about the incredible city of Budapest.
