Terezín was originally a military fortress founded in 1780 by the Habsburg emperor Joseph II. Today we remember it mostly for the ghastly role it played in the history of World War II.

Gestapo, the official secret police of Nazi Germany set up a concentration camp in Terezín in 1940. By the end of the war 150,000 prisoners passed through its gates including 15,000 children.

Its inmates were mostly Jews from Czechoslovakia, Germany and Austria as well as prisoners arrested for resistance to the Nazi regime.

Visit Terezín Memorial to understand the depths of the war atrocities and help to carry the memory for future generations so that we can avoid happening that ever again.
