All about the trip

We will pick you up at 8:30 am centrally in front of Banco de España in Barcelona and head directly to the famous monastery of Montserrat. From a far distance, you will be able to spot the unusual shape of the Montserrat mountain range, which was declared a natural park in 1987. The surrounding valleys often fill up with thick fog in the winter, thus our arrival at the sacred mountain in the winter months may truly be a mysterious experience. The Montserrat mountain attracts many outdoor enthusiasts all year round.

After a brief overview of the route, we will embark on our tailor made hiking tour around the mountain, whilst admiring amazing views. Our first viewpoint will be at Saint Miquel cross. This place offers fantastic views of the Montserrat monastery, the Pyrenees, the Natural Park Saint Llorenc, and the Mediterranean sea south of Barcelona. Our circular route will lead us to several hermitages, where monks used to live and retire in the past.

We will pass by rounded rocks that resemble animals and characters. We will also observe the typical Mediterranean vegetation characterized by dense oak forests, bushes, and aromatic herbs. At the end of our hiking tour, we will visit the famous Benedictine monastery with “la morena”— the black virgin lady. Her appearance and later proclamation by powerful bishop Abbat Oliba resulted in this monastery being built here. You will hear about the legends this sacred place holds and its 1000 years long history.

Nicely tired from hiking around the Montserrat mountain and filled with beautiful outdoor experiences we will return to our meeting point in the center of Barcelona. The small group hiking tour in Montserrat is one of the most exciting outdoor activities near Barcelona. The entire trip will take about seven and a half hours.
