All about the trip
We will start the tour with a visit to Urriðafoss, “The Trout Fall”. It is the largest and the most spectacular waterfall of river Þjórsá. It is also one of the most voluminous waterfalls in Iceland. Our second waterfall to visit is called Seljalandsfoss and it reaches an unusual high of 65 meters, irrigated by the river Seljalandsá, which itself is supplied by Eyjafjallajökull glacier. It is possible to take a path that allows going behind the waterfall. From there, the sight is simply divine. You will discover how fun it is to sneak and disappear behind the water curtain and be away from the world for a moment.
Gljúfurárfoss, also called Gljúfrabúi, is an interesting waterfall carefully hidden behind a narrow opening in the mountain. Listen to the deep roaring, echoing sound of the falling water and become an explorer to discover this magical and intimate place which keeps the purity of a place.
We continue to Skógafoss, one of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland and one of the five largest in the country. Getting so close to the base of such a large waterfall is quite a rare experience. You can also enjoy it from above as there are stairs that lead to the top.
Dyrhólaey is an interesting rock in a form of a door, an opening to the ocean. From there it is possible to admire a landscape of raw beauty formed by the long beaches of black sand, the unleashed ocean, the cliffs with rugged shapes, formed by a piling up of basalt columns. This black sand beach is often considered one of the most beautiful in the world. From there you can observe the Reynisdrangar, these lava columns sculpted by the waters, which emerge from the ocean.
Vík í Mýrdal village is the most southerly village in the country and you can admire its beauty. Beyond Vík í Mýrdal, there is nothing except the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Its church, a white building with a red roof located on a hill, proudly dominates the modest houses of this village. The ocean on one side, the imposing cliffs of Mount Reynisfjall on the other side.
Next up is a stop at Fjaðrárgljúfur. It is believed that Fjaðrárgljúfur was formed around 9000 years ago, by progressive erosion of flowing water from glaciers through the rocks. You can feel the power of nature on the massive rocky walls with impressive shapes and enjoy a view into the valley with the sound of the river in the background.
Our tour takes us further as we will also visit Skaftafell, which is a part of Vatnajökull National Park which includes a considerable part of the biggest glacier of Europe. It is a perfect place for nature lovers with a birch forest, shelter of many birds species. You will enjoy a nice short walk on the glacier edge and will be amazed by the various glacial tongues flanked by jagged mountains, the rugged landscapes, the flora and the fauna.
Svínafellsjökull is a popular glacier tongue of Vatnajökull, which is one of the largest glaciers of Iceland. You can experience the natural contrasts of the region with vast stretches of black sand and craters which suddenly give a way to bright walls of white ice, with blue highlights.
Our last checkpoint is Fjallsárlon and Jökulsárlón. We will make a first stop at Fjallsárlon, a beautiful glacier lagoon before we continue to Jökulsárlón, a major attraction of Iceland. This is a fabulous and magnificent location where a lot of videos and movies were shot (e.g. James Bond, Lara Croft, etc.). Jökulsárlón is one of the most beautiful places in the world, where nature proves once again, that she does wonders.
