All about the trip
Starting from Reykjavík, the drive to Snæfellsnes takes about 3 hours and we will make a few stops on the way.
Our first stop is in Borgarnes at a gas station. It is also a good time to have a break and have a cup of coffee or some snacks.
From Borgarnes to Gerðuberg it is a 40 minutes drive with many nice views on the way. Gerðuberg is a beautiful basalt column. From Gerðuberg to Ölkeldu is a 30 minutes drive. Ölkelda is a mineral spring with carbonated water. Mineral springs are said to have healing powers, so feel free to take a sip. Our next stop is Snæfellsjökull which is 40 minutes from Ölkelda.
At the parking lot, we will prepare for you the right gear needed for the hike and we will give you some instructions. The hike takes from 4 to 6 hours, approach to the glacier will take us between 40 to 60 minutes.
On the edge of the glacier, we’ll put on the glacier gear such as crampons, harness and ropes. It takes about 3 hours to go from the base to the summit. The summit of Snæfellsjökull is at 1446 meters above the sea level.
Lunch break on the summit is breathtaking. During a bright day, you can enjoy the view of the peninsula. But of course, we can’t promise good weather. After lunch, we will start the descent from the summit and we will go back to the car.
