All about the trip
This Hungarian food, wine, walking and tasting tour appropriately begins at The Central Market Hall. Often described as “Budapest’s cathedral of food”, this is one of Europe’s largest and most spectacular indoor markets.
Once inside the market, we’ll introduce you to classic Hungarian cuisine through a variety of local ingredients that are on display here. We will also discuss the history of the spectacular indoor market, the culture of eating and drinking in Hungary, the famous ingredients of Hungary and the dishes that are commonly made from them. We will also tell you exactly why traditional Hungarian recipes call for all that pork fat, paprika and goose liver; there is a good reason!
The sights, sounds and smells inside this building are simply incredible. You will really feel like you are in the beating-heart of Europe. And of course, don’t forget to look-up too! The traditional glass and wrought iron ceiling is huge and certainly worthy of a few photos. As we walk along the market aisles we’ll taste a wide selection of foods…and possibly a small apéritif to 'fortify us' of course.
After we are finished at the market, we’ll start our exploration of the surrounding neighbourhood where we will call upon a traditional butcher’s for our main meal. Once we have finished our large lunch feast, we’ll then head towards a classic coffeehouse to sample some of the cakes which Hungarian bakers are world famous for.
After a quick stop at an award-winning chocolatier, we’ll be ready to relax whilst sampling three glasses of local wine alongside an artisanal cheese board. At this stop, a sommelier will introduce us to the Hungarian wine regions, varieties and styles; helping you put together the Hungarian wine scene in its full context. We end the tour with the “pièce de résistance”, which is a taste of the spectacular golden-tinted aszú wine from Tokaj.
