Learn about seaweed farming in Zinjibār. During the low tide, you will witness first-hand seaweed farming, understand the techniques, see the products created from seaweed and be amazed at the social impact these projects are doing. It gives you the opportunity to see and learn about the seaweed farming and products that are made and the beautiful social impact this project as they are making local seaweed soaps.

Go out to the beach farms to plant seaweed and learn about the economy and culture of local villages.

The Seaweed Center is a socially responsible initiative that provides over 40 female seaweed farmers in Paje, Zanzibar, with an opportunity to better their lives and benefit their community. The project comprises seaweed farms on the Paje Beach, a gathering site for seaweed processing as well as a seaweed products factory located approximately 1-hour drive from Stone Town. The factory produces soaps, creams, and other treatment scrubs from seaweed flavored with other organic ingredients such as Lang Lang that are currently sold locally to the villagers around, to the neighboring tourist hotels, in Stone Town and slowly beginning to be distributed around East Africa.

Visitors on a tour to the Seaweed Center get a rare opportunity to experience the daily life of a seaweed farming woman, the facilities, and the capacity building activities that the center provides. Visitors are invited to go out to the beach farms to plant, tender or harvest seaweed for a hands-on experience on ocean agriculture which is an important economic activity for many women living on Zanzibar's East and Southern Coastline.

Not recommended for participants with heart complaints or other serious medical conditions.

Bookings can only be accepted for persons under 15 years of age when accompanied by an adult who will be responsible for them.

COVID-19 CLEAN AND SAFE

All vehicles are disinfected regularly after each ride. We have established set protocols that we follow to make sure all of these high touch areas are disinfected in every vehicle. An emergency plan has been designed which can be followed in case of an outbreak. In the event that a suspected or confirmed case of Covid-19, we have action plans ready to implement. Medical support is available if required. Not all destinations have the same resources, so we anticipate the needs of our customers should they become ill.

General staff training is in place regarding new protocols to prevent the spread of Covid19.

This training is in various stages:

Initial: containing basic information about the illness, personal hygiene, the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and departmental procedures.

Follow-up: reinforces the basic points and any improvements made. Plus, follows up employees’ concerns and needs.
