All about the trip
Your adventure begins midday in Stavanger with a 2-hour cruise into the Lysefjord. After departing the harbor, you’ll be able to view Stavanger from a different perspective and get an overview of the surrounding fjords, islands, and mountains. Having left the city behind, you’ll glide through the Høgsfjord, and then cruise under a suspension bridge that’s located above the inlet to the Lysefjord. Here, steep mountain walls towering hundreds of meters above the fjord emerge. From sea-level, you’ll be able to feast your eyes on majestic Preikestolen, which appears to reach into the sky above the Lysefjord.
While the cruise navigates back out of the fjord, you’ll visit Vagabond’s cove, where Rødne will share the legend of this mysterious natural landmark. The captain will also carefully steer the boat up to the Hengjane waterfall, where you’ll have the opportunity to sample its delicious crystal-clear water. During the cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to choose between enjoying the striking scenery from the comfort of the boat’s sheltered cabin or venturing out onto the spacious sundeck.
The second portion of your adventure begins back at the mouth of the Lysefjord where you’ll be met by your hiking guide, who will transport you onward to the Preikestolen trailhead. After a short information and safety briefing, you’ll start the hike to Preikestolen.
Your guide will lead you up through marshlands, forests and onward to the mountain’s plateau. This early in the year, weather conditions are constantly changing and the trail is often covered with snow and ice, often well into springtime. We’ll adjust the equipment (ice spikes, etc.) as needed to match the changes in terrain. Along the way, there will be opportunities to catch your breath, enjoy a warm beverage, and snap photos of the spectacular nature around you.
After 2,5-3,5 hours of trekking, while standing atop mighty Preikestolen, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of the Lysefjord and its surrounding mountains and valleys. The exhilaration of standing atop the 604-meter high cliff is nothing short of awe-inspiring. You’ll be able to feel content in knowing that you’re one of the few that have experienced Preikestolen during the off-season. After a well-deserved break at the cliff’s edge, your guide will lead you back down to the trailhead, which will take about 2 hours.
On your way down to the trailhead, you’ll be facing Stavanger and the north sea. You’ll be able to watch as the sun sets over the horizon, sometimes illuminating the sky with vivid colors. When darkness falls, your guide will provide you with a headlamp to ensure that you’re able to safely hike the last stretch of the trail. During the drive back to Stavanger, your guide will take an alternative route, which includes a different ferry crossing. At the end of the day, you’ll arrive back in Stavanger full of unique memories that will surely last a lifetime.
