All about the trip
On an annual basis, Preikestolen or Pulpit Rock welcomes more visitors than any other trekking destination in Norway. In 2018, more than 300,000 hikers made their way up to the top of the imposing cliff that hangs 604 meters above the Lysefjord. From atop nature’s ‘pulpit’, the panoramic views of the Lysefjord are some of the most dramatic scenery Fjord-Norway has to offer.
We invite you to experience a unique Preikestolen hiking adventure, guaranteed to be crowd-free. While the vast majority of visitors hike to Preikestolen along the main trail during daytime hours, our original sunrise hike allows you to experience the beauty of the Lysefjord in near-solitude. Hike to Preikestolen during twilight hours and catch the sun rising over the Lysefjord before the crowds of tourists have even begun to make their way up the trail and then enjoy breakfast or lunch at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge, which is located at the base of the hiking trail.
After a very early-morning pick-up, your adventure will begin. Your guide will transport you further to the base of the hiking trail. After a short briefing, you’ll embark on your journey to Preikestolen. You’ll begin your outdoor adventure in darkness, hiking with headlamps on trails that have recently been upgraded by Nepalese Sherpas. Hiking in the hushed silence of the night is in itself an experience. Though animals are shy around people, it’s a certainty that they’ll be awake and alert, observing you from behind the old trees and scattered boulders that surround the trail. While the wildlife watches, your guide will lead you up through the shifting terrain, which includes bogs, forests, and glacier-scoured mountains.
After approximately 2,5 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the Preikestolen plateau just before sunrise. After finding yourself a comfortable place to relax, you’ll watch as the first beams of sunlight climb over the horizon and illuminate the Lysefjord’s steep mountain walls. While relaxing, you’ll have ample time to take photos and enjoy a warm beverage and snack atop Preikestolen. Long before the first tourist-packed busses arrive from Stavanger, you’ll be on your way back down the trail to conclude your unique hiking adventure with a well-deserved breakfast/lunch at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge.
