All about the trip
Our trip starts at Potes, the capital of Liébana region. To arrive there, we will cross the impressive gorge of the Hermida, one of the narrow gorges along the river Deva.
Once in Potes, you will have the opportunity to do a short walk to the Monastery of Santo Toribio at 3 km from the village. The estimated time to walk toward the Monastery from Potes is 45 minutes. The Monastery of Santo Toribio holds a piece of the cross on which Jesus Christ died. It is one of the four places where the forgiveness of sins can be obtained through pilgrimage. Next Year of Jubilee is 2022.
The importance of this Monastery was already known in the Middle Ages, when the Lignum Crucis was a must visit for the pilgrims who went to Santiago de Compostela. In addition, this place was in itself a place of pilgrimage, with its own identity due to the curative and miraculous powers attributed to the remains of the Saint of Astorga and to the Relic itself.
The pilgrimage that we will carry out is the shortest possible route. In fact, it is the last part of the Lebaniego Way prior to arriving at the Monastery.
At 12:00 we will attend the pilgrim's mass. After the mass, we will visit the chapel of San Miguel from where you will enjoy beautiful views of Picos de Europa. Back in Potes, you deserve a nice local lunch. Traditional “Cocido Lebaniego” (a stew of chickpeas and meat) is the best option to recharge your batteries. After lunch, we will have some free time to visit Potes and do some shopping.
During the afternoon, we will visit San Sebastian de Garabandal, a small village in the mountains. You will have the opportunity to walk up to the "Sanctuary of Los Pinos", the place where the Virgin appeared in the 1960s.
