All about the trip
Gain some insight into Cambodia’s recent dark history on a visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. Taken over by the Khmer Rouge, this former high school was converted into a detention and torture center known as ‘S-21’. Equally as harrowing are the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. Both are grim, but important visits that allow one to dig below the surface and understand present-day Cambodia better. On a lighter note is then onward to visit the Russian Market, the best place in the city for wood and stone carvings, jewelry, clothes, and Cambodian silk souvenirs. We then enjoy lunch at a local restaurant for Khmer delicacies.
In the afternoon, the tour begins with a visit to the hilltop Wat Phnom temple, built-in 1372, and standing 27 meters above the ground it is the tallest religious structure in the city. The interior has a central altar complex with a large bronze seated Buddha surrounded by other statues, flowers, candles, and items of devotion and worship. The walls are covered with murals, especially of Jataka stories of the Buddha's earlier reincarnations before his enlightenment. Continue to the Royal Palace which has been the official Kings of Cambodia’s residence since it was built in the 1860s. There are numerous buildings and structures to peruse as well as beautiful gardens.
On to the Silver Pagoda, named for the over 5,000 heavy silver tiles that cover its floors. Its original name is Wat Phra Kaeo, meaning Temple of the Emerald Buddha; the temple is known for its collection of Buddhas in gold, silver, crystal, and bronze.
