All about the trip
Despite receiving less attention than its more popular northern counterpart, Cusco’s southern valley contains its very own array of wondrous and impressive attractions. This end of the valley is irrigated by the Willkamayu River, which means sacred river in Quechua. Today, the river is better known as the Vilcanota or Urubamba, a powerful waterway that eventually turns into the Ucayali River, before travelling down into the jungle and giving way to the great Amazon River. The waters of this sacred river come from the Vilcanota Mountain range, some of the mountains in Peru that receive the most snow, and reach a maximum height of 6,372 meters above sea level with the revered Ausangate Mountain.
Very early in the morning we will start our trip to the Community of Palccoyo located south east of Cusco. On the way we will have the possibility of seeing the evolution of the road system through three bridges: the Inca (XV Century); the Colonial (Centuries of the XVII to XVIII) and the Modern one that dates from the year 1895 and is made of railway lines. After passing the access control booth and a short stop for breakfast, we will arrive to Huallatakunka where we will begin our walk to get to know this new attraction. Just a few meters from the start we can see the first mountain of a vast mountain range with colors similar to the rainbow, which gives a cheerful and at the same time mystical. This natural beauty is the sister of the famous Vinicunca but closer and with better accessibility. We will enjoy spectacular views through three viewpoints that we will find during our walk, in one of them we can see up to 3 mountains of colors at the same time and in another we will have an impressive view of the Ausangate mountain on one side and on the other side we will have the Cordillera de Vilcanota in front of us. At the end of the hike, we will return to mobility to go to the district of Quehue, province of Canas on the Apurimac River. We will visit Q'eswachaka, the last Inca bridge, a fascinating experience. This suspension bridge that lies on the Apurimac River, is unique in its kind, handmade and renewed year after year by means of a four-day ritual executed by the local communities. We will have the opportunity to cross this impressive Inca construction of 28 meters long, living the adrenaline to the maximum.
