All about the trip
Among the things to see in Sicily, a visit of Syracuse is not to be missed: a journey through places but also through time, a real walk through history, a continuous up and down from terraces overlooking the sea to underground labyrinths. To be able to say that you have visited the city a must is the Archaeological Park of Neapolis, a real open-air museum.
You will leave from Largo Anfiteatro to start a fascinating Walking Tour to discover the Archaeological Park and the origins of this great city. You will discover a natural area rich in finds belonging to different periods of domination: Greek, Roman, and Norman. You will then begin a visit to the Ara of Ierone, built at the behest of Jerone II, tyrant of Syracuse, between 308 and 216 BC to celebrate its power. We will then move on to the symbol of Neapolis Park and the entire city: the Greek Theatre. Used in various eras for different purposes, it is precisely in this fascinating place that time seems to have stopped, especially because in the summer season the I.N.D.A. (Institute of Ancient Drama) brings back to life the masterpieces of the great playwrights of the past, through a cycle of classical plays that every year attracts tourists from all over the world.
The next stop on the Neapolis Walking Tour will be the Grotta di Ninfeo, above the Greek theatre and on the Temenite Hill. Going up the hill you will arrive at the Via dei Sepolcri, a road about 150 meters long where ancient Byzantine hypogea have been found. You will then be surprised by the grandeur of the Latomie del Paradiso, which includes the famous ear of Dionysus, the Grotta dei Cordari and the Grotta del Salnitro. The tour will conclude with a visit to the Roman Amphitheatre, at that time used for gladiatorial combats.
