All about the trip
Historic Monterey Bay initially drew early settlers due to its abundant wildlife and natural resources. Today the area is very much a draw for the same reasons. Millions of visitors every year visit Monterey to see not only the biological diversity and stunning views, but also to partake in history and walk in the steps of historical greats. John Steinbeck of Grapes of Wrath fame spent many years living and writing about this fascinating area, which was at various times once part of Spain, Argentina, Mexico, and now the United States.
Besides the history, there is also an abundance of sea life to experience. Generations ago, waves of industrial fishing exploited this biological bounty along a 276-mile undersea trench that is just offshore. Your tour takes time to explore the area’s well-deserved reputation for coastal scenery, marine wildlife, history, and fine food.
After a pickup from a convenient hotel in San Francisco, you’ll be swept into a Pacific Coast wonderland. As your experienced Expedition Leader cruises along Highway 1 toward Monterey, you’ll be entertained by the picturesque Pacific Ocean coastline. At your first stop, grab a selfie with the Pacific Ocean as your backdrop!
Keep an eye out for the sea otters playing along the shoreline of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. This underwater park stretches along the coast from San Francisco to Cambria and is home to hundreds of species of marine mammals, birds, and fish.
When we hit Monterey, you’ll have two hours on your own to explore! That’s plenty of time to visit the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. You may also stroll out to Lovers’ Point or check out the many boutiques that line historic Cannery Row. Later, grab a seafood lunch at Old Fisherman’s Wharf. You’ll find nothing fresher! You will have a hard time picking just one of the nine varieties of caramel apples at Carousel Candies.
You’ll enjoy more Pacific beauty as we follow the scenic 17-Mile Drive. This famous road winds its way through the Del Monte Forest between magnificent homes, spectacular coastline, and the greens of world-famous golf courses like Spyglass Hill and Pebble Beach Golf Course. Catch a photo of the hardy Lone Cyprus Tree as we near Carmel.
After our Pacific beach tour, you’ll experience the enchanting vibe of the town of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Check out the cool shops on Ocean Avenue or get some white Pacific sand between your toes at the beach!
When there’s interest, we’ll visit the historic 18th century Carmel Mission, where you might pause and reflect on this amazing journey. Then, it’s time to head back to San Francisco, tired but exhilarated knowing it was the day of a lifetime.
Join us for an exciting day in California!
