All about the trip

Join an exciting expedition to the ancient stone quarry of Mons Porphyrites in the Eastern Desert. The elegant purple stone with white spots that had been quarried here has been used to decorate the famous Hagia Sophia Temple as well as other temples, columns and sarcophagi. Explore the ruins of a fortress, temples and wells in the settlements in this large area.

We will pick you up in your Hurghada hotel early morning and drive in a Jeep to the Eastern Desert. Please ask your hotel reception a day before to make a breakfast box you can take with you the next morning.

We will stop on our way on the top of a mountain to get a splendid view of the sun rising and then continue to the quarry. There we will discover 3 abandoned villages with temples and shrines, dry wells, broken pillars and cracked stone baths. There are ruins of a fortress and an impressive hydraulic system that was designed to supply water to the residential area.

Proofs that women and children had lived here with the quarry workers were found during 1994–1998 excavations carried out by a British team. Many objects of daily life such as a hair-pin and a comb made from an oyster shell have been found here.
