Where to go in March

March is usually a month somewhere in-between seasons. Skiing holidays are almost over. Sunny days are not quite here yet. One would probably not take a swim in the Mediterranean unless he’s a hardy fellow. Most of Southeast Asia is getting rather hot and rainy. And the Southern Hemisphere is welcoming autumn. So, you might be wondering where to plan your vacation. Don’t bother, we have picked some great places which are best to visit in March.

Backpacking Vietnam from South to North

The perfect month for road tripping in Vietnam is March! You will want to start your travels in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) and explore the southern part of the country where the summer season is just peaking. You may visit the underground war tunnels, cruise the Mekong Delta or enjoy the beautiful beaches of Nha Trang. Continue your travels up north, where the weather is changing from a cold spring into a very pleasant summer. On your way through the central part of Vietnam be sure to stop by Hoi An and the former royal capital Hue, they are both just simply enchanting. Moving up north you might want to explore the inland limestones in Tam Coc but also those on the sea in Halong Bay. Finalize your travels in Hanoi, for here you will notice a cultural shift compared to Saigon, yet you can still enjoy some amazing Pho soup or the wonderful grilled pork Bun Cha. If you are a mountain lover take the night train from Hanoi to SaPa, as all the best tracks start from there.

Art gallery lovers should go to Madrid

European cities are awakening from the winter blues. So those in favour of sight-seeing, museums and art galleries can enjoy many of Europe’s fine cities. March is quite off-season so you will have a slightly better feeling of having the city to yourself, as from Easter onwards the tourists are flocking to the cities in droves. Our top March tip would be to spend a long weekend in Madrid. The weather is usually sunny, with pleasant temperatures suitable for wearing just a jumper or a light coat. The capital city is packed with amazing art galleries, alternative venues, and incredible museums. Don’t forget to treat yourself to a hot cup of nougat and crunchy churros.

The Northern Lights

Some say it’s magic, some say it’s just a visual illusion. Well, we say, you just have to see it to believe it! The Northern Lights season takes place from December to March. Yet the best visibility is mainly in March. Moreover, the days are gradually getting longer and the temperature is rising. Planning your trip towards the new moon at the end of the month will make this trip even more delightful. And of course, you will be able to take stunning photos during this period. We have handpicked some of the best Northern Lights guided tours in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland.

Treat yourself in Puerto Rico

Who would want to risk having rainy or chilly days on their annual holiday? Why not play the safe card on Puerto Rico in March? The daily temperatures don’t go above 29ºC and the evenings are usually a pleasant 22ºC with almost no rainfall. Puerto Ricans made huge steps in recovering the island after the 2017 hurricanes, so that is another reason to support their efforts with tourism. Besides that, when on vacation you want to be surrounded by happy people, dance your feet off at hidden salsa parties and enjoy BBQ suckling pig. And the beaches? Don’t get us started. No wonder Lonely Planet calls Puerto Rico a “paradise-seeker's pleasure dome”.

Real hiking enthusiasts go to Patagonia

March is always a great weather month for outdoor adventures in Patagonia. This is because of its dry weather and pleasant temperatures down here in Chile. The crowds and prices are also beginning to taper off, making popular national parks like Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares, a lot more peaceful. Chile's Lake District offers some thrilling activities such as white water rafting, zip-lining, skydiving, and horseback riding. When travelling in March, you may want to take part in a multiple-location festival in Argentina, the Fiesta Nacional de Trekking, which attracts outdoor tourists from across the world for a whole plethora of fun activities including, rock-climbing, bouldering, woodcutting competitions, running, and mountain bike racing.
