All about the trip
Admire the spectacular view of Madeira's inland from the peak of Eira do Serrado. Discover the village of Curral da Freiras or Nuns Valley hidden in a verdant valley surrounded with high mountains. And visit the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos on the southern coast.
Departing from Lido in Funchal we make our way up to Eira do Serrado. The mountain offers an unmatched view of Madeira's heartland, its dramatic landscape with high mountains and green valleys.
We descend to Nuns Valley or Curral da Freiras where nuns of the Convent of Santa Clara took refuge during a pirate attack on Funchal in 16th century.
The village is hidden in a beautiful valley and isolated from the outside world by high mountains. It is known for local delicious chestnuts. Every year there is the Chestnut Festival celebrated here.
We drive back to the coast to visit a fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. The Portugese discoverer João Gonçalves Zarco landed here in 1419. And Winston Churchill painted his landscapes in this picturesque village.
