All about the trip

Enjoy a Jeep ride to the mountain of Pico do Arieiro and through beautiful laurel forests. Visit the trout farm at Riberio Frio and take a pleasant 1-hour walk to Balcões where you can admire the magnificent view of the landscape. See traditional houses with straw roofs in Santana.

This amazing trip combines a Jeep tour with an easy walk and allows you to admire the beauty of Madeira's nature in full.

From Funchal we drive up to the top of Pico do Arieiro at the altitude of 1818. The Madeira's third highest peak offers a splendid view miles away on a sunny day.

We drive on to Riberio Frio where we can visit the local trout farm and see pools teeming with trout. Riberio Frio is a popular starting point of levada walks which follow Madeira's irrigation channels or aqueducts typical for the region.

From there we take a short walk to Balcões or "balconies". The path leads through majestic forests with original vegetation. From the Balcões viewpoint we can see the surrounding verdant woods and rocky mountains.

We hop in the Jeep again and continue to Santana. There are still traditional houses there constructed with triangular rooftops made of straw. We can learn a little about Madeira's culture and history in the Madeira Theme Park.

We return by Porto da Cruz and Pico do Facho to Funchal.
