All about the trip

Explore fascinating nature of the north-western part of Madeira. Hike to the source of Levada do Moinho aqueduct with a magnificent waterfall. Walk through the island’s native laurel forest and admire ancient trees and old mills along the way.

We begin our hike in Feira do Gado and follow the irrigation channel in the opposite direction of the water flow. The ancient aqueduct was built by farmers to feed local mills and there are still ruins of the old mills there.

Throughout the day we will see well-tended farmland as well as wild nature with original vegetation. The route leads through gorgeous laurel forest with trees several hundred years old. In 1999 Madeira’s laurel forest was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As we near the source of Levada do Moinho amazing view of a waterfall opens in front of us.
