All about the trip
Experience Jewish cuisine and culture around Budapest’s seventh district. A truly fascinating neighbourhood with many winding streets, impressive neoclassical buildings and old-fashioned artisan shops. On every street you can sense the history, smell delicious food and feel the buzz of the city’s culture. With so much to see all around, it is beneficial to have some guidance on where exactly to go.
So, why not join us for this walking tour? We aim to explore the area’s incredible history and culture, with a special emphasis on tasting lots of Jewish-Hungarian cuisine. Especially as the eateries of the seventh district have been undergoing somewhat of an exciting revival in recent years and this tour will offer you the chance to sample many exciting examples of local Jewish cuisine.
We will also discuss the neighbourhood’s heart-breaking past. These days, the hip seventh district is known for its quirky bars, cool cafés, hidden art galleries and cutting-edge design shops. Before World War II it was one of Europe’s largest Jewish communities and by the early 18th century had become a melting pot of various religions and ethnicities.
To this day, the neighbourhood remains the centre of Jewish life in Hungary. During World War II, Jews were herded into these streets, walls were put up and a ghetto was created. This is where the majority of Jews who survived the war live. During the tour you’ll also be able to see the neighbourhood’s four synagogues, which have long been focal points of Budapest’s Jewish society.
Alongside all this history, we’ll also see the modern face of the district, from fabulous murals to street art, from design shops to cafés. You’ll leave the tour with a full belly, as well as a deeper understanding of Hungary’s Jewish history, culture, and cuisine. No need for lunch reservations or meal planning; this tour will be a curated feast showcasing the best of Budapest’s Hungarian-Jewish cuisine.
