Nestled deep in the history-filled Jewish quarter, hidden within rustic pre-war buildings are some of Budapest’s most popular drinking spots. From the outside some of these bars may look more like squatter’s dens, however, this is all just part of the charm; because inside these run-down dwellings you will find the infamous ‘ruin bars’.

Filled with unexpected layers of detail, these bars have become Budapest’s very own brand of local cool. Abandoned buildings, old cellars and derelict spaces have been transformed into dozens of wildly furnished bars; all with their own unique look, feel and vibe.

These bars have a real ‘Mad Max’ feel to them. Think old bathtubs and broken-down cars transformed into seating, neon lighting everywhere, ladies walking around selling carrots and all manner of post-apocalyptic nostalgia stuffed into every nook and cranny.

Some bars have been around for more than a decade, while others disappear just as quickly as they pop-up. The phenomenon began in the early 2000s and has been evolving ever since. The ruin bars have organically introduced a new style of evening entertainment in Budapest. Going beyond simply serving booze, these cultural, artistic and occasionally gastronomic hotspots have breathed new life into otherwise forgotten areas of the city.

We’ll discuss their cultural and artistic significance, as well as how they have influenced the city’s entire nightlife scene. On this tour you’ll experience a handful of ruin bars in varying styles. We’ll drink with the locals and of course sample a few popular Budapestian drinks, such as fröccs, wine, and pálinka.

Instructions

We ask that guests arrive 15 minutes early so we can get started on time. All Taste Hungary guides will always be holding a Taste Hungary tote bag so they can be easily identified.
