All about the trip
Put on your hiking boots and join us on a beautiful hike on top of the glacier-covered volcano Eyjafjallajökull. This volcano is located on the south coast of Iceland, so this is a perfect day trip from Reykjavík. Eyjafjallajökull stretches 1666 meters above sea level and is one of the most beautiful glaciers in Iceland. This is an excellent opportunity to explore the high volcano and the beauty of Icelandic nature.
We will start from Seljavallalaug (the old swimming pool), where we are going to give you some glacier gear, that you will need later. The hike begins by going up to the small mountain and follow an old trek, mostly gravel and moss.
The beginning of the hike is steep, but after every hill, there is a little flat place to rest. The best part about this hike is that you don’t need to bring a lot of water with you, due to small water streams on the way.
After 2-3 hours we are at the base of the glacier, where we can eat some lunch and gear up for the ice. Our guides are going to teach you how to put on harnesses, crampons and how to use them. We also need to rope up, to be safer on the glacier. From the edge of the glacier, we will hike a right ice slope to the summit.
After this ice slope, we will get to a flat glacier. On bright days you could see the caldera on the glacier. The true summit is Goðasteinn (1666m) that will take us some 30-50 minutes to climb up. This is a nice place to make some photos, have some food and water before we will hike down. We are going to take the same trek back down to the car.
Going down takes us around 3-4 hours depends on conditions. When we get back down, you can take a dip into the swimming pool and have a beer.
Eyjafjallajökull (Island Mountain Glacier in English), is one of the smaller ice caps of Iceland, north of Skógar and west of Mýrdalsjökull. The ice cap covers the caldera of a volcano with a summit elevation of 1666 meters. The volcano has erupted relatively frequently since the last glacial period, the most recently in the year 2010.
