All about the trip
Explore traditional Vietnamese countryside and venture into the ancient village of Duong Lam. See the well preserved 400-year old houses made of laterite bricks. Visit a local family, enjoy a delicious lunch and learn a homemade cake recipe. Admire the temples of King Ngo Quyen and King Phung Hung and Mia Pagoda.
Just a 50-km drive from Hanoi there is an old village of Duong Lam. Here you get a chance to observe lifestyle quite different from that of the capital. The unique architecture and original Vietnamese culture and traditions still survive here.
We walk down the village path to visit Mong Phu temple which is dedicated to national heroes. Two of Vietnam’s kings, Phung Hung and Ngo Quyen were born in Duong Lam and we visit their temples as well.
We enjoy a special Vietnamese dish for lunch with a local family. Then we can join our host in making a local specialty for a dessert. It can be a soft green-lentil cake and rice cakes filled with brown onion depending on the season.
In the afternoon we visit Mia Pagoda built in the 15th century. There is 287 statues of all sizes in the temple.
If we are curious for more we can make 2 more stops on our way back to Hanoi. The first one is the traditional Tay Phuong Pagoda with 18 ancient Arhan statues. And the other one is Van Phuc Silk village where we can see production of some of the best silk in Vietnam. It is a great opportunity to shop for a quality silk to take home as a souvenir.
