All about the trip
Not to be confused with ‘Gili T’ (Gili Trawangan), Gili Tepekong is very small island situated in front of Candidasa in the south east of Bali. Covered in a dense shrub, Gili Tepekong juts sharply out of the blue water and is surrounded by some absolutely awesome places to dive.
Underwater there are numerous rock formations and also some small caves. Here you will find plenty of reef sharks (Trianodon Obesus) who like to take shade from the overhead sun and to hide from smaller fish they’re trying to capture.
Be advised that this is a very strong current boat dive with numerous walls and troughs. Typically, we will dive down to between 18 – 30 metres. The water temperature here ranges from 18° to 25° Celsius. On some days, when the conditions are just right, we are able to see the incredible giant sunfish known as the “Mola-Mola” who ascend from the ocean’s depths to be cleaned by schools of feeder fish.
Gili Tepekong does have a bit of a reputation for being a dangerous dive site. Known among some divers as “the toilet”, the nickname comes from the periodic swirling downdraft currents that can sometimes occur in the south-western area known as the 'Canyon'. So strong are these downdrafts that instead of going up to the surface as nature intended, your bubbles can spiral downwards into the depths of the Lombok Strait. Because of this, Gili Tepekong does indeed demand a healthy dose of respect from its visitors.
As with all our sea dives, you will need diving experience and to be diver certified in order to participate on this activity.
