Drive 70 km to Provadia

The first stop during the self guided tour from Varna is the fortress Ovech in Provadia, a still fairly unknown phenomenon in Bulgaria. Originally a Byzantine fortress from the 4th to the 7th century. Occupied by the Huns, the Goths, Bulgarians and the Ottomans. Walk up from the parking lot; admire the remains of medieval buildings, the sensational wooden bridge and the unforgettable panorama.

Drive 40 km to the Madara Horseman

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, Madara Horseman, is a large rock relief dating from the pagan period, probably made by an old nomadic Bulgarian tribe of warriors in the 7th century. Regarded as The National Symbol of Bulgaria, but don’t forget to visit the natural theatre and chapel and walk to the impressive plateau.
