All about the trip
After leaving Braşov, the tour starts on a road DN1 linking Braşov with Sibiu, parallel to Fagaras Mountains. After about 100 km the road goes through the mountains - this is Transfagarasan. The first stop is the Balea Waterfall where we will take a little break for some photos. It is the place from where the spectacular landscape begins with a breathtaking panoramic view of the mountains and of the winding curves of the road. At the top of the road (2000 m above sea level), we will stop at Balea Glacier Lake and from there the way passes through the tunnel to reach the other part of the Fagaras Mountains, crossing from Transylvania to Valachia.
The road continues downwards with beautiful landscapes crossing imposing Vidraru Dam. It was built in 1965 and is among the greatest dam in Europe. The Vidraru Lake and Fagaras Mountains offer an unforgettable panoramic view.
Next up is a well-known Poienari Citadel built by Vlad the Impaler in the 15th century, the one who inspired the character of Bram Stoker, Dracula. If you want to enter the ruins of the city, you will have to walk 1500 steps. The effort is well worth it as the view of the mountains and of the road is almost unreal. The road continues to the town of Curtea de Arges, the ex-capital of Valachia. We will see the beautiful Monastery of Curtea de Arges with unique Romanian architecture, which contains tombs of our Royal Family, including the Romanian last king, Mihai. A short presentation will be given to you here. This is the last highlight of the trip.
The way will continue to Câmpina town and then back to Transylvania through Bran Pass, the oldest connection between Transylvania and Valachia. Travelling through places dating back to old times, you can admire Romanian traditional villages scattered among the valleys and hills that we will pass on our way back to Brasov.
