All about the trip
Late in the afternoon at about 2 pm, we'll head out to Phare Ponleu Selpak (PPS), is a nonprofit arts school based in Battambang, Cambodian working with children, young adults, and their families through 3 interweaving fields of intervention: art schools, social support, and educational programs. PPS gradually gathered more and more children living in difficult situations and helped them to reintegrate into society through the medium of culture and arts. The artistic training offered has been found to aid concentration, communication, and creative thinking skills, thus vastly improving the choices available to children as they reach adulthood. PPS serves as a tool to build the careers of Cambodian Artists, to revive Cambodian art scenes, to make worldwide arts connections with Cambodia and to contribute to the artistic, educational and social programs of PPS Association.
Continue the journey about 12km southwest of Battambang through the rice paddy field to the Phnom Sampov which means 'Ship mountain' because its peculiar shape reminds of a ship. This legendary 100-meter-high mountain, topped by Wat Sampeou, contains 3 natural caves, lined with Buddhist shrines and statues: Pkasla, Lakhaon, and Aksopheak. Pkasla cave is full of uprooted stones and is considered important because Sampeou inhabitants go there to celebrate after a marriage. Some caves were used by the Khmer Rouges as killing caves. Skeletons of their victims remain in the caves. Before the sun goes down, refreshment with fresh coconut, and snacks at the foothill. At around 18:00, millions of bats evacuate from the caves, creating a dark, fluid ribbon through the sky.
