All about the trip
Meet at the Grasshopper Shop and join us on a tour for a taste of Thai!
We'll gather at our shop near Chiang Mai Gate at 4:30 pm for a 5 pm departure. We promise that there will be something tasty for everyone to eat. Vegetarians are welcome. Come cycle with us to discover authentic Thai cuisine on this unique food tour. The cycling is easy, the food delicious and with a genuine connection with other local culinary boys of Chiang Mai. Meandering the small lanes throughout the old city and beyond to visit some of the city's best-kept dining secrets.
Tha Phae Historic Stop: On the way towards the old city’s eastern gate, we'll cycle through the city’s quaint lanes. Tha Phae gate was once the entrance through which traders brought their wares into the city. At this beautifully restored gate learn about Chiang Mai's old city walls and history.
Three Kings Monument: After the Thapae Gate, we'll cycle to the Three Kings monument before Lert Ros restaurant because it's still a bit too early for the main dishes dish.
Let Ros: This place is not easy to find tucked away in the old city. The restaurant and owners have been serving locals for over 35 years, it will give you the real Thai experience. The open-air kitchen and barbecue in front of the restaurant will have your mouth watering with anticipation as Red Tilapia, seafood and banana leaf-wrapped minced pork with red curry ( Ab - Mhoo ) smoke away, complimented by a palate-cleansing Som Tam, (papaya salad) and morning glory.
The Swan, Shan Cuisine: Yes, we are eating a Burmese dish in Thailand! Northern Thailand's connection with Shan, Hilltribe people of Burma is long and eventful. Located just outside the old city, this restaurants' food is bursting with flavor, it's only one dish but Pickled Tea leaf salad is truly unique and worth the stop! It tastes like an incredible homemade meal with love.
Tha Phae Pad Thai: What is a trip to Thailand without a pad thai? How did this classic become the global Thai standard? Here we will sample the various forms of pad thai, yes, there is more than one. The original name of Pad Thai is ‘Gway Teow Pad Thai'Gway Teow is a Chinese word for ‘rice noodles’, which hints at a Chinese influence. Thailand suffered a rice shortage due to the war and floods, so to reduce domestic rice consumption the Thai Prime Minister, Plaek Phibunsongkhram, promoted eating noodles instead and Pad Thai was born.
Thai Desserts: The first thing that stands out at this very local sweet stop is the vibrant colors of the nearly 40 different dessert ingredients, next is the constant flow of Thais stopping in for a sweet treat. The whole restaurant is an experience in color, excitement, unique flavors, and sugary fun.
Warorot Market: Warorot Market (or Kad Luang) is a must-visit for food lovers as it offers a wide range of ready-to-eat meals, local snacks and all kinds of fresh produce. Wander the market as your guide talks about the different goods on offer. Targeting mostly Thais, Warorot Market is a great place to get a feel for the local way of life. Be ready for some fruit and snacks you may never have seen or tasted before.
Gallery & Gastro Bar: Our final stop for the night is a favorite hidden gem - Down a quiet soi in the heart of the old city sits this charming lush garden dripping with ferns and vines and decorated with terracotta Khmer motifs and sculptures of Angkorian style. It's a green oasis under a canopy of trees, with trickling fountains and lots and lots of Khmer faces peeking from behind foliage. A great place to conclude the tour and enjoy a cold refreshing local beer or herbal drink while you reflect on your food adventure.
We'll ride back to the shop after the tour, full and happy.
