All about the trip
Bari is the capital city of the Bari and Apulia region, located next to the Adriatic Sea, in southern Italy. It's a quintessential Italian city that is rich in historic, seafaring traditions. Like most Italian towns, Bari is particularly noted for its fine selection of local delicacies; so let's go on a street food tour to discover them all!
Together with your English-speaking guide, we will explore Bari to discover the many delicious local delicacies at the markets and hidden down lesser known side-streets. We will meet many local food and wine producers whilst discovering the real southern Italian culinary culture. We eat as we go! Walking, discovering and learning all about the many local specialities.
Our adventure begins by visiting the main attractions of the old town such as the Basilica of Saint Nicholas and its Crypt, the ancient Cathedral of Saint Sabinus and also the Swabian Castle. Your guide will be able to explain to you some of the history of these fascinating landmarks.
After walking for a while you should now be hungry, so we'll stop in a Panificio. Here we will learn how focaccia barese is made and also taste a slice. It's delicious!
Next up is Salumeria, where we will discover the different kinds of salami and cheese available, all whilst drinking a glass of wine.
From here we will then make our way to one of the street corners to discover some yummy fried delicacies. The favourites among the locals of Bari are the sgagliozze (fried polenta) or panzerotti (mini calzones). These delicious treasures have long been a prized tradition in the south of Italy.
Later on there will be a trip to a Gelateria to enjoy some home-made ice cream. Always a treat when you're out in the sun!
Our tour concludes with exploring the modern French part of the city which is situated along the famous seaside walk, where there are also some splendid opera theatres and luxury shopping streets.
