Embark on a journey through the history of Angkor. First stop is the South Gate with its huge statues depicting the churning of the ocean of milk. We visit the ancient capital of Angkor Thom built in the late 12th century. Onwards we head to Bayon temple which is unique for its 54 towers decorated with over 200 smiling faces of Avalokitesvara. Exploring the many faces as you explore the winding stairwells of the famed temple. We visit Baphuon, a Khmer temple converted into Buddhist temple in the 15th century. Its platform is like an artificial mountain that recently re-opened after years of restoration.
Following this, we visit the Royal Enclosure, the Elephants Terrace whose trunked elephants line the outer walls and the Terrace of the Leper King with its intricate carvings. The day ends at one of Angkor’s most popular temples, Ta Prohm. The modern name of this Angkorian temple built in the late 12th to early 13th centuries, Ta Prohm was most notably made famous for being the location where they filmed the Tomb Raider movie. Take time to explore the tree-covered ruins deep in the jungle before returning to Siem Reap town.
Next, we'll have lunch at a local restaurant then we'll head outside of town to the magnificent Angkor Wat. The largest religious monument in the world, Angkor Wat was built during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, Angkor Wat was constructed to represent Mount Meru, the Hindu/Buddhist home of the gods. Inside the temple, the walls are covered with stone carvings and bas‐ reliefs which is quite breathtaking. We take time to explore the inside and the outside of the temple and its grounds, learning about the stories of the intricate stone walls. Your guide will explain the significance of the temple before you have time to explore on your own.
